English language problems of overseas students in Britain

On arrival in Britain the biggest language problem for overseas students is understanding spoken English. It would seem that the main reasons for this are difficulties in understanding local accents and the speed of speaking of British people. Six months later the problem has declined into third place. It is generally agreed that the main reason for this is the influence of environment that students can get more practices and get used to the local accents.

Another big language prolem for overseas students is speaking when they just arrive. It appears that the reasons for this are lack of fluency and limited vocabulary. Six months later、percentage of this problem has decreased 10%, but it has up to first place. It has been suggested that the main reason for this is despite students get more opportunities of speaking with Briton, the progress of speaking still need more and more time to adapt.

The third language problem is writing. It seems that the main reasons for this are poor grammar of students and limited vocabulary. Six months later、percentage of this problem has raised to 32%. It is widely accepted that the main reasons for this are poor teaching in grammar and improper using literal translation. Students perhaps can not use too complex clauses to make sentences.

The last language problem is reading with 3% of overseas students considering it difficult. It would appear that the main reasons for this are poor pronunciation which is not very exact and slow reading speed. Six months later、percentage of this problem has reduced to 2%. It is generally agreed that students can improve their pronunciation and reading speed by reading articles frequently.

On arrival in Britain the English language problems are inevitable. Nevertheless、listening、speaking、writing、and reading are very important for English learning. Students should practice diligently, especially when they have the chance to stay in an English-speaking country for study.
